By: Solitaire Ramos & Glory May Aguilar

With the assistance of the Local Government Unit of Tagum City, a Solid Waste Management and Clean Air Act symposium was held last July 30, 2008 at Aces Tagum College.

All the Acesians were obliged to attend the said event which was facilitated by Mr. Alvin S. Matildo, School In-Charge of SWM. According to the organizers that the purpose of having such forum is to educate the students on proper waste disposal together with the responsibilities and penalties for violating the law.

Engineer Elias M. Ramos discussed the origin of the SWM Law. He said that it was based on Republic Act 9003 entitled “Philippine Ecological Solid Waste Act” which was implemented by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last January 26, 2001.

This program was initially implemented in the hospitals last June 1, 2005 and in schools in January 1, 2006 and then followed by different establishments last July 1, 2006.

Engr. Ramos mentioned that 101,000 kilos of garbage per day here in Tagum City were collected before but after they conducted an information drive, it goes down to 14,000 kilos of garbage per day which was gathered.

On the other hand, Republic Act 8749 known as Philippine clean Air Act of 1999 was promulgated to achieve and maintain healthy air for all Filipinos. What can you do to achieve the ends of clean air act? The speaker mentioned ways to help maintain the cleanliness of air. First, maintain your vehicle, keep it working well. Second, do not burn garbage. Third, do not smoke.

Moreover, he also informed everyone that smoking was banned last May 25, 2001 in public areas, school, private and public offices. This was made for everyone in order to feel the freshness of air not only for us but for our next generations. #
